DIAMONDS

Understanding the 4C System

Diamonds are timeless symbols of elegance and refinement. But do you know what truly defines their value and beauty? That’s where the 4Cs system comes in: Carat, Color, Clarity, Cut. In this detailed guide, we explain how to choose the perfect diamond based on these criteria and what influences its brilliance and price.

Carat (Diamond weight)

The carat is the unit of measurement for a diamond’s weight. 1 carat (1 ct) equals 0.2 grams. The heavier a diamond, the rarer and therefore more expensive it is.

However, two diamonds of the same weight can look completely different depending on their cut and proportions.

Color

Diamonds are graded from D (colorless) to Z (yellowish tint).

  • D-F: Completely colorless, extremely rare and valuable.
  • G-J: Nearly colorless, offering a good balance between quality and price.
  • K-Z: Tints visible to the naked eye, often less expensive.

Clarity (Purity)

Inclusions are natural imperfections in a diamond.

FL (Flawless): No flaws, extremely rare.

IF (Internally Flawless): No internal inclusions.

VVS1-VVS2: Very, very small inclusions, invisible to the naked eye.

VS1-VS2: Small inclusions, barely visible under magnification.

SI1-SI2: Inclusions visible under magnification, sometimes to the naked eye.

I1-I3: Visible inclusions, may affect durability.

Cut (Shape)

Cut is the most important criterion for a diamond’s brilliance. It determines how light is reflected inside the stone.

The ideal proportions for maximum sparkle:
  • An "Excellent" or "Very Good" cut ensures optimal reflection.
  • A poorly executed cut (too deep or too shallow) reduces brilliance.

FAQ

Is a 1-carat diamond big?

It all depends on the cut! A well-cut 1 ct diamond looks larger than a poorly proportioned one.

Should I buy a colorless diamond?

Not necessarily. G-H-I colors appear colorless to the naked eye and are more affordable.

What does a GIA-certified diamond mean?

A GIA-certified diamond has been evaluated by an independent laboratory and meets strict quality standards.
